Archive format converter
Convert existing archives to another format. Inspect their contents, choose supported compression settings, and save the result.
What you can do
Convert an existing archive to another format
Save a received archive in another format, such as 7Z to ZIP. Choose an output format supported for the input.
Inspect contents and folder structure
Check the stored files and folder hierarchy before converting. Dates, permissions and empty folders are preserved where supported by the format.
Use common settings and individual adjustments
Choose a common format for multiple inputs, and switch to individual settings only where needed. Save successful results separately.
How to use
Add archives
Add ZIP, 7Z, RAR or other archives to convert. This is separate from creating a new archive from ordinary files or folders.
Check the contents and target format
Inspect the contents and choose an output format supported for the input. Enter the original file’s password in advanced settings if it has one.
Change only the settings you need
Compression level 5 is usually suitable. Set a password for the new file when ZIP or 7Z is selected.
Convert and save
Download the converted files. Multiple results can be saved separately or together as a ZIP.
When this is useful
Use a format the recipient can handle
Convert received 7Z or RAR archives to another archive format supported at the destination.
Convert multiple archives to the same format
Apply common settings to archives received separately, then convert and save each one.
Converting formats and extracting contents
The archive format is what changes
This tool does not change the formats of the images or documents inside. It repackages the stored files into another archive.
Different formats support different structures
GZ, BZ2 and XZ handle a single file without folders. Choose ZIP, 7Z or a TAR-family format to package multiple files or a folder hierarchy.
Input and output passwords are separate
The password used to open the original file and the password set for a new ZIP or 7Z are separate settings. The input password is not automatically carried over to the output.
Compression level does not guarantee file size
The amount of compression depends on the contents. TAR and the RAR output on this page are stored without compression; TAR.Z compression settings are fixed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extract only the contents?
Use Archive extractor to extract and save individual files. This page creates an archive in another format.
Can I add ordinary files directly?
The input must be an existing archive. This page does not combine ordinary files or folders added directly into one archive.
Can every format have a password?
Passwords for new files are available for ZIP and 7Z. Other output formats do not support this setting.
Will conversion always reduce the file size?
No. The file size may increase depending on the contents and target format. Choose a format the recipient can open.
Are multiple archives merged into one?
No. Each input is converted separately. Saving the results together as a ZIP packages the converted archives into that ZIP.
