Batch rename files with a CSV mapping table
Load the files and CSV mapping table and check the names before and after renaming. Save copies in a ZIP while preserving the original contents and folder structure.
What you can do
Rename using a mapping table
Specify the CSV columns for original and new names to match file names. You can add files from folders together.
Check duplicates and unmatched items
Check the original and new names and their status in the list. Correct duplicates or invalid names before creating the ZIP.
Save copies in a ZIP
Only the names of the copies change. The original files are not overwritten, and the files are collected with their folder structure preserved.
How to use
Select files and a CSV
Add the files to rename and select 1 CSV mapping table containing their original and new names.
Check the CSV columns
Check whether the first row contains column names, and which columns to use for original and new names. The defaults are the first and second columns.
Review the original and new names and the ZIP contents
Review names, errors and warnings in the list. In advanced settings, you can change whether to include files not listed in the mapping table.
Create and save the ZIP
Select Create ZIP to collect the copies and save renamed-files.zip.
Useful when
Match names to a management table
List the current names and management names of photos or documents in a CSV and apply them to copies for distribution.
Hand over files with their folders preserved
Rename files in folders in bulk and deliver them in a ZIP that preserves the original structure.
How mapping tables and names are handled
2 columns for original and new names
Specify the current names in the original-name column and the new file names, including their extensions, in the new-name column. Do not put folder paths in the new-name column.
Match by name or relative path
By default, files are matched by their exact file names. Distinguish identically named files in different folders using the relative-path matching setting and a mapping table.
Preserve the original contents and folders
The new name is applied in the same folder as the original file. This feature does not convert file formats, and changing only the extension does not change the contents.
Review warnings and errors separately
Unmatched items and missing files appear as warnings. Duplicate original entries, collisions between new names or invalid names stop creation of the entire ZIP.
Character encoding and spaces
Prepare a UTF-8 CSV. Names are matched without automatically normalizing letter case or leading and trailing spaces.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to files that are not in the mapping table?
By default, they are included in the ZIP under their original names. You can choose to exclude them in advanced settings. Either way, the list shows how they will be handled.
What about names that appear only in the mapping table?
A warning indicates that the file is missing, and the item is not included in the ZIP. Add the corresponding file or check the name in the CSV.
What if the new names are duplicates?
The ZIP cannot be created if output destinations in the same folder overlap. Differences in letter case alone are also treated as collisions. Names are not automatically numbered, and files are not overwritten.
Can files with the same name in different folders be distinguished?
Use Match by relative path in advanced settings and enter the same relative paths as the input list in the CSV's original-name column. Specify only file names for the new names.
Are any file names prohibited?
Empty names, separators such as / or \ and certain symbols, trailing spaces or periods, and reserved names such as CON cannot be used. Correct names flagged as errors in the list in your CSV.
What happens when I select another CSV?
The previous mapping table and generated ZIP are removed, and the new CSV is loaded. Your target files remain even if loading fails, so correct the CSV and select it again.
Does the ZIP contain only the rows visible on screen?
No. All items in the full list that are set to be included in the ZIP are collected, regardless of the page or scroll position.
Are the original file names changed too?
No. Copies with the original contents receive the new names and are saved in a ZIP.
