Difference detail

Enter text to compare.

What you can do

Check text differences

Compare the original and changed text using line numbers, colors, and character markers.

Apply changes and export to PDF

Apply each change to either text. You can compile the current settings and comparison results into a PDF.

How to use

  1. Enter the text to compare

Type or paste the original text on the left and the changed text on the right. You can also load a text file into each field.

  2. Check differences

Select “Check differences”. You can usually use the tool without changing the comparison settings.

  3. Review changes

Jump to the relevant lines from the change list, and apply them to the other side if needed. Edits after comparison are automatically compared again.

  4. Create and save a PDF

Create a report with “Export PDF”, then download it using the save button that appears.

When to use it

Compare drafts before and after revision

Check rewritten, added, and deleted text against the original draft.

Check changes to settings or clauses

Check character changes in code, configuration files, terms, and other text. This feature does not automatically judge the meaning or validity of the content.

Reading differences and applied changes

Additions, deletions, and replacements

The result counts are the numbers of compared lines classified as added, removed, changed, or unchanged. Consecutive changes are grouped into one change block, so these counts differ from character counts or the number of change blocks.

Whitespace and newline differences

Even if the text looks similar, whitespace, full-width or half-width characters, and a final newline can differ. Ignoring whitespace is not the same as how the presence or absence of newlines is handled.

Where changes are applied

Replace the range of a change block with the content from the opposite side. The on-screen text changes, and the original loaded file is not overwritten.

What the PDF includes

The report includes comparison settings, input names, and line data. It presents the original and changed text so they can be distinguished, rather than using a screenshot of the screen.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there differences when the text looks the same?

Whitespace, full-width or half-width characters, or a final newline may differ. You can ignore whitespace or letter case as needed.

Can I save comparison results as a PDF?

Export a PDF while comparison results are available, then save it once it is created. Changing the text or comparison settings removes the previous PDF from the files available to save.

Can I compare with one side empty?

Yes. If one side has content, it can all be compared as additions or deletions. You cannot start a comparison when both sides are empty.

Does ignoring specified strings use regular expressions?

No. The exact strings you add are excluded from the comparison. Differences are calculated using that setting without deleting anything from the original input text.
