Add page numbers
Add sequential page numbers to a PDF to make references in reports, papers, and handouts easier to follow. Set the number position, starting number, and whether to number the cover, then save the numbered PDF.
What you can do
Choose from 9 positions
Combine top, middle, or bottom with horizontal positions and use the preview to check for overlap with the body text.
Specify the starting number and format
Start from a number other than 1 or combine the number with the page count. You can also choose whether to number the first page.
How to use
Add PDF
Select the PDF to add page numbers to.
Choose number position and format
Specify one of 9 positions, the starting number, and the format. To leave the cover unnumbered, uncheck the first-page option.
Check in the preview
Switch between preview pages to see whether numbers overlap the body text. Enlarge the preview if needed.
Save the numbered PDF
Click “Add page numbers” and download the generated PDF.
Useful when
Prepare reports and proposals
Add sequential page numbers to documents you distribute so the pages you discuss are easier to reference.
Submit papers and reports
Align the page numbering in a manuscript for submission so sections needing review are easier to identify.
Continue numbering across separate manuscripts
Specify a starting number that continues from another file to prepare a booklet or manual.
What to know before adding numbers
Check for overlap between numbers and body text
If the selected position already contains text or graphics, the added number may overlap them. Switch between preview pages to check.
What starting number and page count mean
The starting number is the first number added. The denominator in “Number / Page count” is the number of pages selected for numbering. If you exclude the first page, it is not included in that count.
Frequently asked questions
Can numbering start from a number other than 1?
You can change the starting number. To continue from another PDF, enter the next number in that sequence.
Can I leave the cover unnumbered?
Uncheck “Number the first page too” to leave the first page unnumbered. The specified starting number is used on the first page selected for numbering.
