Data transfer rate converter
Specify the transfer rate value and the source and target units to convert to Mbps, MB/s and more. Distinguish between bit and byte, and between decimal and binary units. Copy the converted result.
What you can do
Use the unit you need
Convert the speed shown for a connection or in transfer software to your chosen unit.
Distinguish bit and byte
Convert while checking notation differences, such as Mbps versus MB/s or MB/s versus MiB/s.
How to use
Enter the speed and original unit
Enter the displayed number and choose the original unit, such as Mbps or MB/s.
Choose the target unit
Select the unit used in the document or screen you want to compare with.
Convert
Check the result and original conditions. Copy the result if needed.
Useful when
Interpret a connection speed display
Read a connection speed shown in Mbps as MB/s, the unit used in transfer software.
Compare speeds in the same unit
Use it to bring different units used in documents into the same unit and compare what the numbers mean.
Differences between transfer speed units
1 byte is 8 bits
1 byte is 8 bits. For the same transfer speed, 100Mbps equals 12.5MB/s. Distinguish uppercase B from lowercase b.
MB and MiB use different multipliers
MB is 1 million bytes, while MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. Choose the unit exactly as it is written in the source.
Converted values and actual transfer speed
This page converts units. It does not measure changes in speed due to congestion or the performance of the sending or receiving endpoint.
Frequently asked questions
Are Mbps and Mbit/s the same?
They are the same unit. This page uses the notation Mbps.
Is the converted result the actual communication speed?
It is the input speed expressed in another unit. It is not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee that transfers will always run at that speed.
Input and results
- Input
- Transfer speed, source unit, and target unit.
- Results
- Transfer speed in the selected unit.
- Copy
- Copy the displayed converted result. Changing the input clears the previous result.
