ROI calculator

Calculate net gain, ROI and the return multiple from the initial investment and the total returned, including the initial investment. Compare amounts using the same currency, amount unit, tax basis and time period, then copy the results or save them as text. ROI is not annualized.

Initial investment and total returned

Enter amounts from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000 with at most six decimal places. Use a decimal point, without grouping separators or exponent notation.

Enter the full amount returned, including the initial investment, rather than only the gain.

What you can do

Check the return on investment

View the net gain as a percentage of the initial investment.

View net gain and the return multiple

Check the gain after subtracting the initial investment from total returned, along with the ratio of total returned to the initial investment.

Copy or save the results

Copy all three results together or save them as a text file for comparison notes or reports.

How to use

  1. Enter the initial investment

Enter the amount spent on the initiative or investment. It must be greater than zero.

  2. Enter the total returned

Enter the full amount returned, including the initial investment. Use the same currency, cost scope and tax basis as the initial investment.

  3. Calculate and view the results

Check ROI, net gain and the return multiple. Use the same time period and cost scope when comparing with another initiative.

When this is useful

Compare the efficiency of investments

Compare returns for initiatives using initial investment and total returned collected over the same period and cost scope.

Find the gain from total returned

Report the difference as net gain and show the return multiple using the full amount returned, including the initial investment.

Total returned, net gain and ROI

Total returned includes the initial investment

An initial investment of 1000 and total returned of 1250 produce a net gain of 250. Entering only the gain of 250 in the total returned field changes the meaning.

ROI and the return multiple

ROI is net gain ÷ initial investment × 100; the return multiple is total returned ÷ initial investment. In the same example, ROI is 25% and the return multiple is 1.25 times.

ROI is not annualized

This page has no time period input, so its ROI is not an annual rate. Avoid directly comparing figures based on different time periods or cost scopes.

Frequently asked questions

Does total returned include the initial investment?

Yes. Enter the full amount returned, including the initial investment. The calculation subtracts the initial investment to find net gain.

Is the displayed ROI an annual rate?

No. It compares only the two amounts entered. No annualization or compounding conversion is applied.

Can I calculate a loss?

Yes. Net gain and ROI are negative when total returned is less than the initial investment. The input amounts themselves must be nonnegative.

Can I use currencies other than yen?

You can enter both amounts using the same currency and amount unit. No currency conversion or tax adjustment is applied.
