File transfer time calculator

Estimate the time needed to send or receive a file from its size and transfer rate. Adjust efficiency if needed, then copy the results in seconds, minutes, hours and days or save them as TXT.

Open advanced settingsEfficiency 100%

100% means no adjustment. Set it to 100% when using a measured transfer rate.

What you can do

Calculate time from file size and speed

Specify a file size in units such as GB or GiB and a speed in units such as Mbps or MB/s to calculate the required time.

Adjust efficiency only when needed

In advanced settings, you can specify the efficiency relative to the entered speed. At 100%, no adjustment is applied, and the entered speed is used as is.

How to use

  1. Enter file size and transfer rate

Enter the file size and transfer rate to use for the calculation, each with its unit.

  2. Change efficiency if needed

Open advanced settings to adjust it. Use 100% when using a measured speed as is.

  3. Check the required time

Press “Calculate.” Check the results and conditions used, and copy or save if needed.

Useful when

Estimate sending or receiving large files

Estimate waiting time from the planned file size and available speed.

Compare transfer conditions

Change the file size or speed to compare how much the required time changes.

How to read file size, speed, and efficiency

Divide the file size by the effective speed

Calculates after aligning byte and bit units. The theoretical time to transfer 1GB at 100Mbps with 100% efficiency is 80 seconds.

Distinguish GB from GiB and Mbps from MB/s

GB is a decimal size unit, while GiB is binary. Mbps is bit/second, and MB/s is byte/second. Check the units shown by the source.

Do not adjust measured speeds twice

A measured speed already includes actual reductions. When using that value, 100% efficiency is the default approach. A fixed loss rate cannot be applied to every connection.

Frequently asked questions

Will it always finish in the calculated time?

This is an estimate assuming the entered speed stays constant. The actual time varies with speed fluctuations, the performance of the sender or receiver, and other factors.

What does 80% efficiency mean?

Calculates using 80% of the entered speed. 100Mbps is treated as 80Mbps. It does not mean that the speed decreases by 80%.

Can I send files from this screen?

This screen calculates time using file size and speed. It does not send files or measure speed.
