Replace a video's solid-color background
Replace a green, blue or other solid-color background with an image, video or color. Adjust the color tolerance and edges, then save the video with its original audio.
What you can do
Replace a solid-color background
Choose green, blue or a custom color to remove, then show an image, video or solid color behind the remaining foreground.
Adjust the color tolerance and edges
Choose how closely colors must match and soften the edges. Check the subject's outline and colors in the preview.
Keep the source audio
Play the composited preview, then save it as one video. Audio from a background video is muted.
How to use
Choose the source video
Add a video shot against a green, blue or other solid-color background.
Choose the color to remove and the new background
Adjust the color tolerance and edges. Select an image, video or solid-color background, then change its position and size if needed.
Create a preview and save
Play the preview to check the edges, background duration and source audio, then save the video. Create a new preview after changing settings.
When it is useful
Use a consistent background for product videos
Combine footage of a product shot against a solid color with a prepared background image.
Add a background to an explainer video
Place explanatory images or video behind footage shot against a green screen.
How the removed color affects the result
How chroma key works
Chroma key makes the selected color and similar colors transparent so the background behind them shows through. It does not automatically identify and cut out people or objects.
Avoid setting the tolerance too high
Higher tolerance removes more colors close to the selected color. If clothing or a product contains the same color, those areas may also disappear.
Check the background edges and duration
Adjust the position and size when the background has a different aspect ratio. If a background video is shorter than the source, the selected solid color appears after it ends. The background does not loop automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Can I automatically remove any background?
This tool works with solid-color backgrounds. It cannot automatically isolate a person from a complex scene.
Why are parts of the subject disappearing?
Lower the color tolerance and check that the selected color matches the background. Color alone cannot distinguish the subject from a background of the same color.
What can I use as the background?
Use one image, one video or a solid color. You can adjust the position and size of an image or video.
Is the original audio kept?
The source video's audio is kept. Audio from the background video is muted. Use Video editor to add other audio.
Which formats can I save?
MP4 is selected by default. WebM, MOV and MKV are also available. Output settings let you change the size, frame rate and quality.
