Subtitle format converter (SRT and VTT)
Open a UTF-8 SRT or VTT subtitle file and convert it to the format you need. Review the text and start and end times, optionally check it with a local video, then save the subtitles in UTF-8. SRT cannot retain VTT positioning or display settings.
What you can do
Convert SRT and VTT
Choose the subtitle format required by your player or the person receiving the file.
Review text and display times
Check the start time, end time and text of each cue. Format conversion does not move the times.
Save a subtitle file
Create UTF-8 subtitles and save them with the original name and your selected extension.
How to use
Choose subtitles
Choose one SRT or VTT file.
Check the format and contents
Choose SRT or WebVTT and review the subtitle times and text. You can also check them with a local video.
Create and save the subtitle file
Choose Create subtitle file, then use Save subtitles to get the converted file.
When it helps
Meet a required format
Prepare subtitles for SRT delivery requirements or a player that uses VTT.
Prepare subtitles for web video
Convert your SRT subtitles to WebVTT for use as a file separate from the video.
Subtitle text, times and extra information
SRT and VTT are subtitle formats
Both store display times and text. Export to the format you need rather than only changing the filename extension.
Format conversion does not move times
The start and end times and text are retained. This does not automatically fix timing delays or errors in the subtitle text.
VTT information that SRT cannot store
VTT header information, notes, cue identifiers, positioning and display settings cannot be saved as SRT. A warning appears before you create a file when this applies.
Check the display in your player
Line breaks and markup in the text are retained, but styling support and actual display vary by player.
Frequently asked questions
Will the display times change?
Format conversion does not change start or end times. Use the subtitle timing tool to move subtitles earlier or later.
Will VTT positioning remain in SRT?
SRT cannot store those settings, so positioning, display settings and cue identifiers are omitted. Text and times are exported.
What happens to cue numbers and line breaks?
Line breaks in subtitle text are retained. SRT cue numbers are assigned from 1 in output order. The output is not byte-for-byte identical to the original, including its line endings.
What if the text looks garbled?
This tool reads files as UTF-8. Check the original encoding and, if needed, choose the subtitles again after converting their character encoding.
Can I convert without a video?
Yes. Only the subtitle file is required. Choose a local video only when you want to check the display.
Can I edit or automatically generate subtitle text?
This tool converts existing SRT and VTT files. It does not edit or translate text, or automatically transcribe video.
