Compress images for Discord
Select one still image and adjust its file size to fit Discord's attachment limit. Choose settings to match the displayed limit, then check the appearance and actual dimensions of the JPEG, PNG, or WebP image before saving. If the format, dimensions, and other settings are unchanged and the image is within the limit, the original image is saved as is.
What you can do
Match the displayed attachment limit
Choose a suggested file size or specify your own limit. Match the limit displayed in the Discord version you use.
Adjust the image only as much as needed
Quality and dimensions are adjusted to reduce file size. If the supported format and dimensions are unchanged and the image is within the limit, the original image is saved as is.
How to use
Select a still image
Select one still image in JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, or GIF format.
Choose a file size limit
Choose an attachment limit. Only if needed, use advanced settings to change the output format or background.
Check the result and save
Check the file size, actual dimensions, and image appearance, then save it.
Useful when
Send large photos in chat
If a photo you took exceeds the attachment limit, adjust its file size and save it.
Fit transparent assets within the size limit
Create an image with settings that preserve PNG or WebP transparency, then check that it is still large enough for your needs.
What to check when adjusting file size
Dimensions may be smaller than the original
The image's width and height may also be reduced to meet the specified file size. Check the actual dimensions shown in the result.
Avoid recompression if already within the limit
If you can use the original format and dimensions and have not changed the output settings, you can save the original image as is.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use animated GIF or WebP images?
This use case is for still images. Images with multiple frames cannot be loaded.
Can I save a PNG with transparency?
For PNG and WebP, you can use settings that preserve transparent areas. If you switch to JPEG, these areas are filled with the background color.
Are the settings the same as for video compression?
You choose a file size in the same way, but image processing handles formats, transparent areas, and conditions under which recompression is unnecessary. The processing differs from video processing.
