DPI & PPI calculator
Use known image pixel dimensions, print dimensions or PPI to calculate the print size, required pixel dimensions, and effective horizontal and vertical PPI. Plan how large to print an image or what image size to create, then copy the results or save them as text.
What you can do
Convert between print dimensions and pixel count
Calculate print dimensions or the required pixel count from known dimensions and PPI.
Check vertical and horizontal PPI
Check separate vertical and horizontal values even when the image and print size have different aspect ratios.
How to use
Choose the value to calculate
Choose print size, required pixel count, or effective PPI.
Enter the known values
Enter width and height and, if needed, PPI, then choose mm, cm, or in as the unit for print dimensions.
Check the calculated results
Click “Calculate” to display the results. Recalculate after changing the values.
Save the results if needed
Copy the calculated values or save them as a text file.
Useful when
Consider print dimensions
Find the width and height when printing your image at a specified PPI.
Decide the dimensions of an image to create
Check the required pixel count from the final dimensions and specified PPI.
The relationship between print dimensions and PPI
PPI and DPI are different values
PPI is the number of pixels per inch in an image, while DPI is the printer’s dot density. This tool calculates image PPI.
Print dimensions vary even with the same pixel count
Specifying a higher PPI for the same image reduces the calculated print size. The image itself is not changed.
When aspect ratios differ
Vertical and horizontal PPI differ when the image and print dimensions have different aspect ratios. Check how distortion, cropping, and margins are handled where the image will be published or printed.
Required PPI depends on output conditions
The required value varies by printing method, paper, viewing distance, and other factors. Check your printing provider’s specifications.
Frequently asked questions
Does increasing PPI add image detail?
This tool only performs numerical calculations. It does not change the image’s pixel count or resolution metadata.
Does 300PPI always guarantee a good print?
There is no single answer. The original image, printing method, paper, and other factors also matter, so check the requirements of your printing provider.
What does the tool read from an image?
Read the width and height from JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF and fill in the input fields. This does not retrieve DPI information within the image.
